Staten Island Ferry Adventure

On my run this morning, I ran by the Staten Island Ferry. I still hadn't been on the ferry and knew nothing about Staten Island, so I decided to check it out. The ferry ride is free(!) and about 20 minutes each way. I did some research on my phone on the ride over, and I don't know what I was expecting, but it seems like there's really not too much to do in Staten Island. There are some museums and a zoo, but that's about it. Some interesting facts:
  • Of the five boroughs of NYC, Staten Island is the least populated, but the third largest in terms of area
  • Over 65,000 people ride the Staten Island Ferry everyday
  • Staten Island has the oldest elementary school in the US

When we arrived at Staten Island, I followed the other riders off the ferry, but I noticed that the majority of them were getting right back on another ferry to take them back to Manhattan. I was a little confused and wanted to actually get out and explore Staten Island for a bit, but it turns out you have to take a bus to get anywhere, so I got on the ferry to Manhattan too. Even though it was cold, it was a really clear day, and I got some good pictures. Overall, it was a nice ride.
